During the Budget Session of Parliament, a sharp row erupted after Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi attempted to quote from the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief Gen MM Naravane while responding to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s remarks questioning Congress’s nationalism. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh objected, saying unpublished material could not be cited, accusing Gandhi of misleading the House, and Speaker Om Birla ruled that such content could not be read. BJP leaders Kiren Rijiju, Giriraj Singh, and Nishikant Dubey criticized Gandhi, linking the matter to national security and historical Congress failures. Congress MPs Shashi Tharoor, TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee, and RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha defended him, noting he cited a published magazine article quoting Naravane, emphasizing parliamentary debate and the public’s right to information. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav supported the importance of raising border and national security issues.
