Pun Nibu recites Raja Obong's benging, Pa' Mada, Kelabit Highlands

Описание к видео Pun Nibu recites Raja Obong's benging, Pa' Mada, Kelabit Highlands

I made this movie from video which I shot in August 2008 in Pa' Mada, in the Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak, Malaysia, as part of the Cultured Rainforest research project funded by the UK government through the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Pun Nibu, of Pa' Mada, recites here a poem/song, known as a benging, said to have been composed by his great-grandfather Raja Obong, the father of the first chief or penghulu of the Kelabit, Ta'i Ewan, who lived nearby on the Diit river. It talks of his strength as a leader, and his ability to look after his people and feed them; and of his pride at the installation of his son as Penghulu.
