The character in this song knows he's a creature of the night, but still he needs to wander through the light of day to reach his goal (which we don't know exactly what it is, but serves as a metaphor for all our goals). Out in the day light he instantly feels lost and damned, but soon comes the autumn rain, which gives him new breath and hope to go ahead and fulfill his dreams. So this song is about resilience and persistence in reaching your objectives in life, and also at the same time an ode to the melancholic season of the fall.
