This Airbus vs Boeing: The Jumbo Jet Race full-length documentary is a story of the rivalry between Boeing and Airbus is no doubt one of the most incredible human and technological adventures of the 20th century. A modern-day Western, with the protagonists trying out every underhand trick and bluff possible to achieve their aims. But it is also a story of power and influence, driven by geopolitical ambitions and struggles, where deals and contracts define a country. This story covers the competition between Airbus and Boeing and the casualties of their battle to become the best airplane manufacturer in the world. Each manufacturer trying to one-up the other. Boeing with the 747 and Airbus with the A380 respectively. Who ultimately finished ahead? That story is still being written.

The competition between Airbus and Boeing has been characterized as a duopoly in the large jet airliner market since the 1990s. This resulted from a series of mergers within the global aerospace industry, with Airbus beginning as a pan-European consortium. At the same time, the American Boeing absorbed its former arch-rival, McDonnell Douglas, in 1997. Other manufacturers, such as Lockheed Martin and Convair in the United States, British Aerospace (now BAE Systems), and Fokker in Europe, were no longer able to compete and effectively withdrew from this market.

In the 10 years from 2007 to 2016, Airbus received orders for 9,985 aircraft and delivered 5,644, while Boeing received orders for 8,978 aircraft and delivered 5,718. During their period of intense competition, both companies regularly accused each other of receiving unfair state aid from their respective governments. In 2019, Airbus displaced Boeing as the largest aerospace company by the revenue due to the Boeing 737 MAX groundings, pulling in revenues of US$78.9 billion and US$76 billion, respectively. Boeing recorded $2 billion in operating losses, down from $12 billion profits the previous year, while Airbus's profits dropped from $6 billion to $1.5 billion.
