A severe depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm named Montha—contributed by Thailand—and is poised to strengthen further into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28, when it is expected to make landfall near Kakinada along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam during the evening or night, bringing maximum sustained winds of 90-100 kmph gusting up to 110 kmph, heavy to very heavy rainfall across central and north coastal districts, thunderstorms, and squally winds, prompting high-level alerts from the IMD and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who has directed district collectors and SPs to prepare action plans, deploy NDRF/SDRF teams, ensure essential services, and issue red/orange alerts for districts like Kakinada, East Godavari, Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam, and others, with holidays declared for educational institutions on October 27-28 to mitigate potential loss of life and property damage.
