Collapse of the USSR - Raw Footage of First Nagorno-Karabakh War (1990)

On 19 January 1990, ITN's cameras filmed Armenian Soviet soldiers and ethnic Armenian citizens of the Azerbaijani enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh fighting on the frontlines of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Amidst the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenian separatists of Nagorno-Karabakh, backed by soldiers of the Armenian SSR, sought to break away from the Azerbaijan SSR, which in turn fought to suppress the secessionist movement with the support of Turkey. The years-long conflict, fought mostly in the harsh mountain terrain of Karabakh, saw numerous instances of ethnic cleansing on both sides, and eventually led to ethnic Armenians governing Nagorno-Karabakh under the newly-established Republic of Artsakh. The conflict was reignited in 2020 and ended in Azerbaijani victory, with Russia brokering a ceasefire between the two belligerents.
