President Donald Trump is advocating for changes in how American history is presented in Smithsonian museums, citing concerns over certain exhibits. The White House has identified several exhibits it believes need to change, including those at the African American History Museum, which suggests concepts like the "nuclear family" and "work ethic" are white qualities rooted in racism. The Latino Museum's portrayal of the Texas Revolution as a pro-slavery fight and the Mexican-American War as an invasion has also drawn criticism. The White House claims other exhibits celebrate illegal border crossings, highlight drag culture and transgender athletes in women's sports, or reimagine the Statue of Liberty holding tomatoes instead of a torch.

The governance of Smithsonian exhibits rests with the Smithsonian Board of Regents and the Secretary of the Smithsonian, who is appointed by the board. Vice President JD Vance is a member of this board. President Trump has issued an executive order and a White House directive indicating his willingness to restrict or cut federal funding unless the Smithsonian aligns its exhibits to showcase national unity, American exceptionalism, and eliminate what the administration describes as "divisive" or "ideological" content.

The White House is conducting a comprehensive review of exhibits, materials, and curating processes across Smithsonian museums, aiming to remove narratives they consider "divisive" or "partisan." The administration is also requiring museums to submit their budgets within the next 120 days. In 2024, the Smithsonian received approximately $1.09 billion in federal taxpayer dollars, with $892 million allocated for operations and $197 million for facilities and capital projects. Additionally, the Smithsonian secured $621 million from private sources, including endowment returns, donations, grants, and business revenues.

Historically, presidential influence over the Smithsonian is not uncommon. Teddy Roosevelt encouraged the expansion of natural history collections and supported conservation. Lyndon B. Johnson oversaw the creation of the National Museum of History and Technology in the 1960s, and George W. Bush authorized the National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2003.
