Among the bustling masses of Tokyo, from the heart of Shinjuku where bullet trains streak past and the relentless pace of Japanese work culture sets the tone, it is all dictated by the presence of the Salarymen. While many of them endure toxic workplaces, risk karoshi (death from overwork), or collapse drunk on late-night trains, there are also others who have chosen a different path. In this video, we show the hidden life of Takashi, who has endured the “Salaryman” lifestyle for most of his adult life, but as he’s gotten older, he has begun to embrace his individuality, pursuing his personal …. and challenging the rigid norms of Japan’s work culture. In our time spent among Japanese corporate culture, it was clear to us that there was a profound clash between individualism and collectivism, which inevitably, forced us to confront the deeper questions about our purpose on this earth.
