Born on 14th December 1898 in Murshidabad, a town in British India, Mirza hailed from a prestigious lineage, being the great-grandson of Mir Jaffar, the last Nawab of Bengal.
After the formation of Pakistan, Mirza served as Secretary to the Government from 1948 to 1952. Later, in 1955, he assumed the position of Governor of East Pakistan. Following the succession of Ghulam Muhammad, Mirza emerged as the last Governor-General of Pakistan, and under the 1956 Constitution, he became the first President of Pakistan. His presidency lasted from March 1956 to 24th October 1958.
However, Mirza's tenure was not without controversy. He infamously abolished the 1956 Constitution, with General Ayub Khan's support, effectively ending the democratic era. Our video unveils the political backdrop surrounding Iskandar Mirza during this time, including his instrumental role in the formulation of the first constitution and his encouragement of General Ayub Khan's First Martial Law in Pakistan.
In 1955, under Mirza's leadership, the One Unit scheme was introduced with the aim of streamlining administration. Yet, East Pakistan perceived this move as a denial of their right to representation. Consequently, in 1958, Mirza dissolved the constitution and imposed Martial Law, remaining as the president while appointing General Ayub Khan as the Chief Martial Law Administrator. Eventually, Ayub Khan coerced Mirza's resignation, leading to his arrest and subsequent exile in London until his passing on 12th November 1969.
