The Automatic Transmission Range Switch ECU Signal is a switch array that tells the E C M the mechanical position of the shift lever. The E C M then compares this value to the pressure feedback switch to determine if the transmission is in the correct gear.

Seen here at the center is the five element resistive gear position sensor. These can be of the magnetic reed switch type, or any other mechanical device.
