November 4, 1989 - Following a two-year post-college commitment to the Navy, David Robinson lived up to—and perhaps exceeded—all expectations in his long-anticipated NBA debut. Squaring off against the previous season's Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers (winners of two of the previous three NBA titles), Robinson finished with 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a 106-98 statement win.

With a nearly completely revamped roster, Robinson led his team to a 35-game turnaround, lifting the Spurs from 21 wins in 1988 to 56 wins and a second round playoff appearance. Playing all 82 regular season games, Robinson averaged 24.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.9 blocks and 2.0 assists, securing Rookie of the Year honors via unanimous vote.
