Desire in Chromatic Harmony: Neofunctionality in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde

Описание к видео Desire in Chromatic Harmony: Neofunctionality in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde

In this short video series, Professor Kenneth Smith (University of Liverpool) gives an introduction to some of the themes that feature in his new book, Desire in Chromatic Harmony: A Psychodynamic Exploration of Fin de Siècle Tonality.

In this first video, Kenneth introduces his theory of how tonal functions (the Tonic, Subdominant, and Dominant) rotate in a particular sequence, essentially moving around the circle of fifths while making chord substitutions by minor third relatives. To explicate this, Kenneth analyses the opening section of Wagner's Prelude to 'Tristan and Isolde.'
