Why did Dungeons and Dragons ever have tournament play at all?

This video asks a simple question: "What did TSR think was important enough to count when the game was put under pressure?"

Tournament play forced D&D to be explicit. Actions had to be scored. Decisions had to be judged. Time and survival mattered. When those priorities were written down and compared across tables, they revealed what early D&D actually assumed about player behavior.

Using classic TSR tournament modules, scoring sheets, Dragon Magazine coverage, and RPGA materials, this video explores why tournament play existed, what it was designed to test, and what it taught players about how the game worked.

This is not about how you are supposed to play D&D. It is about what survived when the game had to function under strict constraints, and what that tells us about the game’s original design.

SEEDLIP BOTANICAL SOUR
➡️2 oz Seedlip Garden 108 Non-Alcoholic Botanical Spirit
➡️1 oz Fresh lemon juice
➡️0.75 oz Simple Syrup (I used a Rosemary Simple Syrup)
➡️Garnish: Lemon peel
➡️Make: Shake all ingredients over ice; strain into a rocks glass over a large cube. Express the oils from the lemon peel over the top of the drink, then drop in.
