In this video, TechCabal's reporter Muktar Oladunmade, breaks down how Nigeria's tax agency, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), is leveraging new technology to monitor real-time electronic transactions across banks, fintechs, and card providers. The goal? To plug tax collection loopholes, especially around Value Added Tax (VAT).

With its new Transaction Monitoring System, FIRS can now track microtransactions—yes, even that ₦5,000 or ₦10,000 POS payment at a bar or store. This system doesn't deduct tax directly, but it gives FIRS visibility and the ability to cross-check reports with real-time transaction data.
