What Does Racial Bias in Medicine Look Like?

Joel Bervell, a 2017 Yale University graduate and Washington State University medical student, has started using his Instagram page to address racial bias in the medical community.

“I’ve been blessed a lot to be able to be in a position where I can now look at both sides from the medical community and from the Black community, and try and kind of remedy those rifts that have been created,” he says.

The medical community spends millions of dollars annually to conduct studies, testing and to buy lifesaving devices, but Bervell says diversity is not always a consideration, which has become too big of a problem to ignore. COVID-19 is perfect example of this, he says, noting how pulse oximeters are more likely to be more inaccurate for Black people.
