🇬🇧 Maastricht is a city and a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. It is the capital and largest city of the province of Limburg. Maastricht is located on both sides of the Meuse (Dutch: Maas), at the point where the Jeker joins it. Mount Saint Peter (Sint-Pietersberg) is largely situated within the city's municipal borders. Maastricht is adjacent to the border with Belgium and is part of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, an international metropolis with a population of about 3.9 million, which includes the nearby German and Belgian cities of Aachen, Liège and Hasselt.

Maastricht developed from a Roman settlement (Trajectum ad Mosam) to a medieval river trade and religious centre. In the 16th century it became a garrison town and in the 19th century an early industrial centre.[11] Today, the city is a thriving cultural and regional hub. It became well known through the Maastricht Treaty and as the birthplace of the euro.[12] Maastricht has 1677 national heritage buildings (rijksmonumenten), the second highest number in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. The city is visited by tourists for shopping and recreation, and has a large international student population.

Maastricht is ontstaan bij een doorwaadbare plaats in de rivier de Maas, waaraan het zijn naam te danken heeft (Maastricht = Mosa Trajectum = doortocht door de Maas). Maastricht is al tweeduizend jaar lang ononderbroken bewoond. De stad heeft een lange en veelbewogen geschiedenis, waarvan de talrijke historische gebouwen en kunstschatten in kerken en musea getuigen. Internationaal kreeg de stad grote naamsbekendheid door het Verdrag van Maastricht (1992), dat de Europese Unie in haar huidige vorm creëerde en de weg vrijmaakte voor de invoering van de euro als Europese munt.

De stad wordt in de rest van Nederland vaak gezien als "buitenlands", vooral door de perifere ligging vlak bij België en Duitsland, maar ook door het atypische landschap, de Maaslandse huizenbouw, de afwijkende geschiedenis, de ingewikkelde taalsituatie, de dominantie van het katholicisme (vroeger meer dan nu), de sterke nadruk op het gemeenschapsleven (fanfares, carnaval, processies) en de vermeende Bourgondische leefwijze.

Der Name der Stadt ist aus dem lateinischen Traiectum ad Mosam und Mosae Traiectum („Maasübergang“) überliefert, der wohl auf die von den Römern errichtete Brücke zurückgeht.

Das Stadtwappen zeigt einen silbernen, fünfzackigen Stern auf rotem Grund mit einer goldenen Krone gekrönt und von einer Engelsgestalt im blauen Gewand gehalten.

Maastricht ist ein bedeutender Zielort des Tourismus in den Niederlanden, der nach Amsterdam die meisten Kulturdenkmäler (rijksmonumenten) beheimatet. Das ganze Zentrum, mit der Vorstadt Wyck, steht als Gesamtanlage unter Denkmalschutz (beschermd stadsgezicht). Die Universitätsstadt weist einen hohen Anteil internationaler Studenten auf.
