Learn how students at Sask Polytech use both a carbon fiber 3D printer and a metal 3D printer to give them relevant skills upon graduating.

Sask Polytech is based in western Canada and has approximately 26,000 students. It offers over 150 programs in everything from business and hospitality all the way to science and engineering technology.

Students have access to both the Mechanical Engineering Technology program and the CAD/CAM Engineering Technology program. The CAD/CAM Engineering Technology program empowers students to use robotic CNC equipment and 3D printers. The educational institute brought on these technologies to ensure its students have relevant skills and capabilities when they graduate.

With a Markforged Metal X system and a Mark Two, students have the ability to learn about designing for additive manufacturing, and how to use carbon fiber as well as several different types of metals.

“The most rewarding part of my job I would say is just seeing the students at the end of two years. Not only did they learn how to do design work, but you actually see them working, making parts, making mistakes, learning from their mistakes, and then going out into industry as a functioning technologist,” says Tim Muench, Program Head for the Mechanical and CAD/CAM Engineering Technology programs at Sask Polytech.
