Myford Super 7 - more on the spindle adjustment

Описание к видео Myford Super 7 - more on the spindle adjustment

The spindle got hard to rotate on a couple of occasions when I used the machine for hard boring. I investigated and found it boiled down to an insufficient pre-load setting on the pair of bearings used. The inner races of these are compressed against one another with the action of the nut on the rear of the spindle on the one side and a step on the spindle on the other side. I read the instructions that Myford has provided in the S7 manual plus one their website and sure enough.. I had missed the important part that the spindle has a scribe mark that shall be aligned with the slot in the split nut! Doing so you can proceed with adjusting the front bearing clearance the way described:
- loosen the pair of castellated nuts so the the spindle floats freely
- then tighten the front nut , thereby moving the whole assemble backwards, while rotating the spindle (I had the chuck mounted and just grabbed hold of this thrusting the spindle backwards at the same time twisting it clockwise/anticlockwise) until the spindle gets hard to rotate
- tighten the rear nut
- loosen the front nut 15 degrees
- tighten the rear nut again
