The sun had just woken up and was pouring its golden rays over the unfinished house. Farkhunda stood next to Reza, her sleeves rolled up and a shawl tightly wrapped around her head. The smell of fresh cement was the smell of hope and effort. Reza’s shovel was mixing sand and cement in a regular rhythm, and Farkhunda was spreading it carefully and meticulously on the ground with a trowel. A smooth and solid cement path was to be built in front of the entrance door; a path on which Mustafa and Mersad would one day play.
Mustafa had left early in the morning with his school bag, but little Mersad was playing with his toys a little further away. He was excitedly digging small holes in the dirt, thinking he was doing engineering. From time to time, he would look at his parents, who were engrossed in their work, and he would smile. Farkhunda and Reza spoke to each other without words, but with their looks. Looks that said: "Look at what we are building! Not just a house, but a castle of dreams for our children." The sound of the trowel dragging on the cement, the sound of Reza's shovel, and sometimes Mersad's laughter, were the symphony of their efforts. They knew that the road was long, but each piece of cement that was spread was a brick on the wall of their bright future.
