Development of Nova Launcher is sure to be slow, but the custom launcher isn't going anywhere.

Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Android News Byte.

#android #androidnews #novalauncher

We have some sad news today, as Branch Metrics, the company who acquired Nova Launcher back in 2022, has confirmed they are laying off over 100 employees across the company.

This includes people who have been working on the analytics side, those who worked on the Nova Launcher code base, and people within the customer service side.

Sadly, this seems to have affected long-standing pillars of the Nova Launcher community, including Cliff Wade and Rob Wainwright, who confirmed the details on Twitter as well as the official Nova Launcher discord server.

We've learned that Branch Metrics has actually laid off everyone involved with Nova Launcher itself. . .except its founder and original developer, Kevin Barry. Which can only mean that development going forward is going to be incredibly slow as they previously had 12 people working on the popular custom launcher.

Some are speculating that development may even come to an end in the near future. Since we haven't heard much from Kevin himself. He did confirm that work on version 8.1 is very close to being released, though.

What we do know, is that anyone seeking support for Nova Launcher going forward will likely have to rely on community volunteers since they laid off the entire support staff.

But there are many questions left to be answered.

conclusion
It's no secret that the custom launcher scene has slowed to a crawl as of late.
With many stock launchers offering enough features and stability to give most people little reason to look for alternatives.

Personally, I've been looking for a new launcher on my Pixel 7 Pro daily driver, as I'm tired of being forced to have the At a Glace widget on my homescreen. I still don't like that Google has not included a way for us to disable it.

So I've been using Lawnchair Launcher as of late because I stopped using Nova Launcher after it has been acquired by this analytics company who just laid people off.

Hopefully all of these people are able to get another job very quickly, so they don't end up having trouble paying their bills and putting food on their table.
