The pharmacy industry is at a crossroad. Profits are down and their biggest controllable expense is manpower, so instead of wondering how much does a certified pharmacy tech make, the question should be geared toward job security.

Insurance companies, acting on behalf of clients that have purchased health insurance from them, continue to drive down the reimbursement rates for prescriptions. This has been the biggest negative effect on pharmacy in the last fifteen years.

You don’t have to have an MBA to realize that when profits go down, there are changes on the way. Pharmacy technicians are most likely the third highest paid employee in the store just behind pharmacists and store management.

But the store can't run without pharmacists or management, so pharmacy technicians become the first employees to get their hours cut or positions eliminated completely.

Another tactic that is being used is to hire only part-time employees. This eliminates having to offer and pay for benefits for full-time employees, such as health insurance and 401K.
