The term ‘Ndrangheta means nothing in Italian and apparently it derives from Greek meaning a courageous person. Actually, it is a very weird word which does not follow the usual grammatical rule of the Italian language. It starts with an apostrophe and it has a very strong and unpleasant sound which is barely pronounceable also by Italians. A synonymous of ‘Ndrangheta is “Onorata Societa’” , which means “Honorable Society”, and is a clear reference to freemasonry. Despite nowadays ‘Ndrangheta is almost a multinational with branches all over the world, it was originated in Calabria, a hilly and poor region in Southern Italy, where the main bosses are still located. Barely internationally known until a decade ago, investigators and journalists all over the world commonly define this criminal organization as ‘Ndrangheta Inc. given the incredible economic power and capillary network its affiliates can rely on.
