(Movement 1) And then it begins, and is also already there, as if it had never begun. A sometimes abysmally dark, sometimes brighter minimal noise, like the waves of an infinite ocean. Minimal music, certainly because of the constantly repeating patterns, but with an incredible emotional intensity and depth – a kind of "expressive minimalism". And yet the first movement remains true to one of the original aims of Minimal Music: the liberation of music from goal orientation, from finality. It seems to me that the first movement even embodies this aspect in a special way. But what’s so bad about finality? Perhaps this: Either it is dishonest, because we human beings have no goal, no home here in this world of becoming and passing away. Or it is presumptuous, because it claims to reach beyond the limits of death. We human beings can neither simply remain within the boundaries of death nor can we go beyond them. We are left with the longing for the infinite, the ground of all being, a longing in which we seek to become like the infinite. And I hear this longing in this first movement, a longing that I hope will be fulfilled one day when all earthly music has fallen silent.
