Officials in Kent declared a major incident today over the gridlocked queues of cars and lorries waiting to get into the port of Dover and through the Eurotunnel.

Ferry companies warned drivers they were likely to face several hours of delays, while thousands of lorries parked up on the M20 could be stuck there for as long as 18 hours.
