Released during the early 90s fighting game boom sparked by Street Fighter II, Superior Soldiers was IREM’s attempt to break into the genre — blending digitized art, flashy super moves, and a cast of cyber-enhanced warriors battling for survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

Despite its impressive visuals and ambitious concepts, Superior Soldiers never gained the same recognition as its contemporaries. Its slightly stiff controls, wild character designs, and bizarre story gave it more of a cult classic status among arcade enthusiasts. It’s often remembered for its unique animation style and IREM’s signature sound design, which gives it a distinct early-90s energy.

In Japan, the game was titled Perfect Soldiers, and while it shared similarities with the Western version, some minor differences existed between regional releases. The roster features eight playable fighters, each with their own over-the-top designs — from armored mechs to demonic warriors.

IREM would later step away from the fighting game scene entirely, making Superior Soldiers one of their final arcade ventures before the company refocused on other projects and eventually became known for series like R-Type.
