Sarajevo has come under heavy fire Sunday in attacks that have left five dead and 11 wounded.

A shell hit a building in the suburb of Dobrinja on Sunday morning, killing four people - while mortar directed at western parts of the city injured four.

It's thought the shell was fired by the Bosnian Serb army.

The attack comes less than 24 hours after NATO and the European Union agreed to deploy a rapid response force in Bosnia to help protect U-N peacekeepers.

U-N peacekeepers rushed to Dobrinja on Sarajevo's outskirts to find four people had died in the attack.

A further eight were injured, after an artillery shell thought to have been fired by Bosnian Serbs.

The wounded included Bosnian government army soldiers. All were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Hours later, four civilians were wounded and taken to the main Sarajevo Kosevo hospital, after two mortar shells landed in a western part of city.

Among the wounded were two children, including a 14-year girl who was carried in unconscious.

In another incident, one person was wounded when he came under sniper fire in his garden south of the city centre.

Bosnian army officials said five people have been killed and 11 wounded in Sarajevo so far today.

Today's attacks come one day after the E-U and NATO agreed to deploy a rapid response force in the region.
