WELCOME TO A WORLD OF GODS AND MONSTERS!
Strange Form invites you to a very special reading of the prologue of his novel, Versus. Though the rest of the book is third person, the opening sequence is told in first person to let the audience see the world through the eyes of one of its inhabitants. Versus is the first proposed story in a series of books, starting in Cleopatra’s last days, as Rome closes his fingers around her empire. All the while the gods of Egypt work behind the scenes to stop Set from releasing Apep, the chaos serpent. But in a world not far from the upper and lower kingdoms of the Egyptian pantheon, new gods are rising up and taking advantage of the animist beliefs of Western European tribes. With a cast of Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and early Celtic gods as well as Angels, Demons, and real historical figures, versus is a unique fantasy adventure that asked the question, does man serve the gods, or are the gods forever servants to man.
This story is my passion project and one I have been working on for the better part of my life. It’s part one of a proposed three-part series that deals with the world of the gods and the world of men, and how they are often locked into a codependent relationship. A cycle of man’s belief altering the gods and the gods altering man’s belief. The first book centers around the final days of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, as the Egyptian and Greek gods contend with Roman encroachment into their culture, all the while the proto-gods of Western Europe are seeing an exploitable power vacuum in the animist beliefs of the tribal people of that region. If you love history theology and obscure occult references this might be the story for you. The opening chapter is a prologue told from a first-person point of view. Though (other than one other fourth wall breaking chapter) the rest of the book is told from third person point of view, I wanted to open the story with something more intimate. Book 2 would jump ahead and take place during the Arthurian legend in the dark ages across 500 years introducing us to a host of new gods including Norse deities. The third book is actually where the entire idea originated from, and would take place in the modern era, in that it stemmed from a conversation a friend and I had when we were teenagers. We contemplated how interesting would be to see a story where a group of wrongly sentenced prisoners had one chance to escape from hell, and that was during the apocalypse. The first book has been completely finished, coming in at just over hundred thousand words. Books 2 and three have full skeleton outlines written. And you my viewers are going to be the AB test for my viability as a storyteller. If this one proves popular I am considering turning the first book into a podcast, though I don’t know that I will be able to do as in-depth a visual presentation next time, as the photo manipulation alone took me around a month to complete. However, I will definitely continue with the same narration style and audio effects.
So, if you end up liking the opening to this book, shout it from the rooftops! and let’s see if we can create some viral buzz around this project.
