Illegal sand mining in Haryana’s Aravalli hills exposed an entire jungle mafia but the officer who revealed it is still waiting for justice.
This is the story of Sanjiv Chaturvedi, a 2002-batch Indian Forest Service officer, who faced 12 transfers in just 5 years because he dared to expose corruption.
In his first posting in Haryana, Sanjiv linked several bureaucrats and even former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to illegal mining operations.
In 2011, those accused were officially declared guilty. At the same time, Sanjiv successfully fought back against false cases filed against him, after the President of India ordered the removal of chargesheets and revoked his suspension.
In 2012, he was posted to AIIMS Delhi as Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO).
Within just 18 months, he investigated over 200 corruption cases, exposing multiple scams.
For this extraordinary courage, he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2015, often called Asia’s Nobel Prize and he donated the entire prize money.
But in 2016, his Performance Appraisal Report mysteriously gave him a “Zero” rating.
In 2017, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) stayed this appraisal. Shockingly, a contempt of court case was then initiated against Sanjiv himself.
The most disturbing part?
When Sanjiv approached the courts seeking justice, 16 judges have recused themselves from hearing his case so far.
In legal terms, this is called “recusal” but not a single judge has provided a written reason.
Many believe the reason may be uncomfortable truths:
The people Sanjiv exposed include former ministers, cabinet ministers, and powerful senior bureaucrats many of whom still hold influence today.
