Captured by animal smugglers when he was just born, the macaw Blu never learned to fly and lives a happy domesticated life in Minnesota, United States, with his owner Linda. Blu thinks he's the last macaw of his kind. But when they discover that Jewel, a female, lives in Rio de Janeiro, Blu and Linda go to meet her. The smugglers capture Blu and Jewel, but the birds escape and begin a risky adventure to freedom.
