Since the Navy embarked on a long-term strategy to retire its 1980s Ticonderoga-class cruisers, some of the cruiser fleet has been put through a modernization program to ensure the capabilities of U.S. carrier strike groups for the next decade. Ten of these cruisers were modernized in the 2000s, with seven more following in 2015.
