Featuring Kevin Dean
A film by Randy Cole
Cinematography - Randy Cole & CaroH
Sound Recording by Paul Johnston
Filmed September 30th, 2011 in Montreal

This rare Civil War rotary cornet was made in New York City by Frederick Busch. The instrument was restored prior to this film by one of the best brass technicians in Canada, Michel Bathalon at Twigg Musique (http://www.twigg-musique.com). The horn is pitched in Bb and A High Pitch, and on this recording we hear Kevin Dean performing in A High Pitch, which is close to modern Bb.

The horn is a rare example of a Side Action Rotary Valve (SARV) American horn, and rarer still due to two unusual features. The bell of the horn is in solid sterling silver, which is extremely uncommon for the period. The body is in nickle-silver alloy (German silver).

These choices of metals have helped the instrument survive in essentially perfect condition, with no corrosion or wear from humidity or use.

In addition to the rare sterling bell, the horn features a fourth rotary valve which drops the pitch a 1/2 step from Bb to A High Pitch. The fourth valve was not outfitted with a key, nor a spring seat, and bore no signs of ever having a flat key in place. It was quite easy to manually turn the valve without the aid of a key, but a two-way rocker key was recently fabricated in German silver for the instrument for ease of use.

The bell is hand engraved "F. Busch Maker, New York".

Great care was taken to record the cornet without any alterations or processing to the sound. An RCA BK-11 ribbon microphone was used, along with a Bang & Olufsen BM-5 stereo ribbon.

Kevin Dean is professor, and a founding faculty member of the Jazz program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music (http://www.mcgill.ca/music/).
