Check out my channel where I explore a Chinese language called Hoisan 台山話 that has been spoken in America since the 1800's. The Hoisan language originated from a county in China by the same name from which the majority of Chinese Americans traced their ancestry up to the 1960's. While there is still a Hoisan Chinese community in America today, the immigration of Chinese people from other parts of China since the 1970's has left the story of Hoisan widely untold. The language is also known by exonyms such as Toisan and Taishan, but native speakers of the language call it Hoisan. I learned the Hoisan language from my monolingual grandmother and want to share it with others by documenting it through my videos. My videos will focus on teaching the original Hoisan language of my grandmother from the 1920's, not in the context of Cantonese or Mandarin, but in its own context as an independent, free-standing language with distinct vocabulary, grammar, tones, and sounds.
