Indian Army To Procure One Million Anti-Personnel Mines From Private Sector To Secure LoC Against Infiltration.

Private players have been invited to participate in the bidding process for a contract of around 1 million anti-personnel mines. Interestingly, it is only private companies who are being asked to bid. Such mines are used regularly along the Line-of-Control (LoC) to tackle infiltration attempts by terrorists. The LoC remains the world’s most mined area after the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing North and South Korea. The company which clinches the contract will be required to supply one million mines over a five year timeline. The mines which the Indian Army wants to procure are of the Non Metallic Mine (NMM) 14 type, which is especially difficult to detect as it is primarily made of plastic.

Lockheed is bidding for a contract, estimated at more than $15 billion, to supply the Indian Air Force with 114 combat planes and has offered to shift its F-16 production line from the United States to India. Lockheed Martin has submitted a proposal evincing preliminary interest to supply F-21 fighter jets to the Air Force and winning the bid and also working on manufacturing the wings for its F-16 fighters from India. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics mentioned that the wings of all future F-16s that the company will sell worldwide will be produced in India's Tata Advanced Systems, Hyderabad.

Post Balakot strike, Punjab witnessed heavy drone activity by Pakistan and in many instances, breaching the Indo-Pak international border. Heavy drone activity was noticed from Pathankot to Fazilka districts. Sources in the Army say the Pakistani drones carried out the operation mostly at night and our troops could hear the noise of the drones and the light on them was also visible. However, it was not possible to shoot them down with small arms during the night.

In certain areas, where air defence guns were available, attempt was made to acquire these drones as targets but the low radar profile of these flying machines made it difficult to lock the air defence guns on to them.

The Indian Air Force's 3 Base Repair Depot in Chandigarh has been given the responsibility of establishing repair and overhaul technology of VK-2500 engines of Medium Lift Helicopters. This is to ensure post-production maintenance support capability for the Russian made MI-17 V5 chopper fleet. The 3 Base Repair Depot of the IAF was established in February 1962 and its role was basically to overhaul and repair Russian transport aircraft, helicopters, their aero-engines and aggregates.

The depot undertook extensive repair, overhaul and rendered spares support to all the war-waging machinery and ensured highest serviceability to support the wars of 1965 and 1971.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has launched a massive operation along the 180-km International Border (IB) with Pakistan to detect underground, cross-border tunnels in view of possible infiltration attempts by terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir. Armed with modern tools and equipment, BSF personnel began the operation with clearing bushes and digging and tilling the land close to the three-tier border fencing up to the Zero Line with Pakistan.

The exercise has been launched along the IB in the Jammu frontier area to detect cross-border, underground tunnel. The operation was initiated earlier this week following the arrest of a Pakistani youth from a village in the RS Pura sector in Jammu. The man, Mohmmad Amin, crossed the International Border and managed to reach the village last week even though there was no breach of fencing, raising apprehension about cross-border tunnels. As a counter-infiltration measure, the BSF has also activated its ground sensors to detect underground tunnels.
