The Ferrari SF-24 utilized a pull-rod rear suspension, employing a tie rod rather than a strut. Persistent rumors have surrounded Maranello's 2025 Formula 1 challenger, suggesting a shift to a push-rod rear suspension. According to reports, the 677 project may involve a fundamental overhaul of the suspension systems on both axles, introducing new kinematics. However, these speculations appear to misinterpret Frederic Vasseur’s recent statements regarding Ferrari. Previous predictions had already hinted at a transition to a push-rod setup between 2023 and 2024, a change that ultimately did not materialize.

At the time, Italian aerodynamicist Enrico Cardile offered a straightforward explanation as to why the switch was not made. This provides an opportunity to revisit his insights nearly a year later. The core idea is that adopting a push-rod suspension at the rear offers some advantages, but the benefits are less substantial than they might seem. Simply replacing a tie rod with a strut does not inherently deliver a major performance boost. The key advantage lies in optimizing airflow toward the rear by repositioning internal components higher, which creates a more streamlined lower section.

With the SF-24, Ferrari had already invested significant resources to strike a balance between the two suspension layouts, achieving impressive results. This “technical compromise” involved reorganizing the components beneath the bodywork to function more efficiently than before. Additionally, resizing these components allowed for a slimmer design in the lower rear section. Despite this, the tie rod remained in place, causing minimal disruption to airflow in that area.

Mercedes, too, transitioned to a push-rod rear suspension during the 2024 season. This adjustment introduced various challenges early on, requiring months of refinement to optimize performance. The push-rod suspension will also feature on the upcoming W16. In Ferrari’s case, internal evaluations during the previous season revealed no substantial performance gains to justify abandoning the pull-rod system, especially considering the added weight and reduced flexibility it would entail.

The interaction between the rear suspension and the car’s floor is critical, as the suspension heavily influences the floor’s ability to perform within its optimal range. Achieving harmony between these elements is essential and yields significant advantages. “Compliance” in this context refers to the suspension’s capacity to deform under load, a characteristic that directly impacts the accuracy of the aerodynamic map. Since the introduction of their upgraded wind tunnel, Ferrari’s development efforts have become more consistent, as evidenced by progress observed since the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
