"Three Pieces" presents the listener with a triptych of works for solo piano written during the height of the COVID19 pandemic. As it was for many others, this was a period of reflection for me, which I took as an opportunity to revisit some creative first principles, namely the simple act of shaping an idea and spinning it out across time. An artisanal approach guided my creative process for these works, and with it an endless tinkering of line, harmony, and duration until something worthy of the instrument began to emerge. "Prelude" is composed out of a central pitch series that resembles (and is developed in the manner of) equal parts tone-row, cantus firmus and melodic formula. "Nocturne" explores the resonant qualities of the piano and its capacity to project musical depth and space. "Elegy" features bell-like repetitions that straddle a threshold between gentle calmness and deep foreboding.

Christopher Goddard is a Florida-based Canadian composer, pianist and organist. As a composer, Christopher Goddard has been commissioned by NYO Canada, Esprit Orchestra, Quatuor Molinari, No Exit New Music Ensemble, and others. His work has been recognized by the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, the Canadian League of composers, and the Macdowell Foundation, and has been broadcast by BBC Radio 3 and CBC Radio 2. As a pianist, he has premiered several new solo and chamber works, performing internationally at the Samos Young Artist Festival and the Lucerne Festival, and collaborating with such groups as Wet Ink Ensemble, Columbia Composers, and the Penn Composers Guild. His duo Aether Eos with violinist Leah Asher has toured extensively across North America, offering recitals and creative workshops.
