In January 2025, and at 42 years old I had the fortune of experiencing skiing on real snow, at real altitude and with the best of people (my uncle and aunt).

Living in Italy, my uncle and aunt sorted the logistics and found a good resort for a beginner (me). All I had to do was put in a bit of practice (which I did at the indoor practice spaces in Shenzhen and Guangzhou) and get myself there.

I’ve enjoyed snow many times in my life, but not in a mountainous region like this and it took my breath away (or was that the altitude).

I enjoyed developing some skills that got me down some limited gradient slopes, and I learnt that I’ve a lot to learn. When you pick up a new sport later in life it’s definitely more challenging to learn, the fear overrides the instinct. I still had a great time and more importantly some fantastic bonding and memories made with family. My uncle and aunt, at retirement age continue to whizz down the mountains like kids, an inspiration for sure.
