Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” has been reborn into an all-male Korean opera production, consisting of 12 male actors. The Korean traditional opera “changgeuk” is a genre of Korean theater, where an ensemble of pansori sing and act as part of their storytelling means.
This reinterpretation of “Salome” incorporate many traditional Korean elements in its genre, music, stage art and constumes. Go Sun-woong, the artistic director of the Seoul Metropolitan Theater, transform this Oscar Wilde’s classic about decadence into a drama about the grostesque nature of human desires, featuring characters who have been blinded by love and obsession.

오스카 와일드의 [살로메]가 한국 전통의 창극, 심지어 12명의 남성 배우만으로 구성된 "남성 창극"으로 새롭게 태어났다! 창극이란 여러 명의 판소리꾼들이 역할을 나누어 노래하고 연기하면서 이야기를 엮어나가는 한국 극의 한 분야이다. 남성 창극으로 재탄생된 이번 무대에서는 장르뿐만 아니라 음악, 무대 미술, 의상까지 모두 한국에서만 제작 가능한 것으로 대체되었다. 또한 원작을 각색한 고선웅 서울시극단 단장은 오스카 와일드의 ‘탐미주의’ 희곡을 ‘욕정의 막장극’으로 뒤바꿨다.
