Jim Gavin was introduced on the bookies at 25/1 as “a long shot”, and now has better than evens odds to win outright.

Gavin is a retired Irish Defence Forces officer, and served in the Irish Air Corps and roles in UN Peacekeeping. Afterwards, he managed Dublin’s senior men’s football team from 2012-2019, winning 7 Sam Maguires.

Gavin beat Billy Kelleher in Fianna Fail’s secret ballot 41 to 29. Gavin has identified himself as a centrist, a "constitutional republican”. McGregor (50/1) still has live odds, even with his drop-out announcement. He now has the same odds as Nutriband CEO Gareth Sheridan. Even Gerry Adams (40/1) now has better odds than McGregor.


With Micheal Martin’s endorsement, Gavin has found himself eerily close to becoming Michael D Higgins successor, with a campaign nobody believed in.
