Using a battery, some copper wire, and small magnets, you can build a simple motor that spins like magic. The wire is shaped into a frame and balanced on the battery so it lightly touches the magnets and completes the circuit. Once it makes contact, it begins to spin rapidly all on its own!

Here’s why: the battery creates an electric current flowing in one direction through the wire. The magnets underneath set up a magnetic field pointing in opposite directions across the sides of the frame. When current flows through a wire in a magnetic field, a force is generated — and in this case, the forces on the two sides of the wire push in opposite directions. That causes a torque, which sets the whole frame spinning.
