It's not unusual for plastic surgeons to evaluate patients who have developed a crooked nose. In the vast majority of cases, this is a result of a traumatic event that's occurred at some point in their life, but occasionally we do see patients who are born with a crooked nose and have a true congenital nasal deformity.

Regardless of the cause of the crooked nose, we find that it adversely impacts patients' self-esteem, self-image, and self-confidence. We find that patients frequently say, "My nose does not fit on my face." They tell us that they have a lack of harmony, balance, and proportion between the nose and the surrounding structures. For this reason, they frequently seek consultation with a plastic surgeon who can correct the deformity for them.

When patients have this problem, it's important to realize that there are multiple contributing anatomic factors. In some cases, the nasal septum may be deviated. In this situation, it's not unusual to have difficulty breathing through the nose as well. In other cases, the nasal bones may be distorted and displaced. In other cases, the nasal tip structures may be twisted and rotated in an abnormal position.

It's important to realize that every patient is unique, and it's very important that the problem be appropriately analyzed. Once this has been accomplished, we feel that performing an open rhinoplasty is appropriate so that the surgeon can directly visualize the abnormal anatomic structures. In some cases, a septoplasty may be necessary to straighten the septum. In other cases, the nasal bones may be need to be fractured and realigned. In other cases, the nasal tip cartilage may need to be derotated and repositioned in the normal midline position. In some cases cartilage grafts may be necessary to make sure that the problem doesn't reoccur.

When this approach is utilized, satisfaction rates are extremely high and success rates are very high as well, but it's important that you see a board certified plastic surgeon who has experience taking care of this problem. This is the best way to ensure that you have a good result.
