Hi Dr. Sandeep and Dr. Sreekanth, A friend of mine who's been recently diagnosed with lung cancer has been counseled about VATS versus Open lobecotmy. He is very confused. Could you please explain the difference between the 2 procedures?

Most of the early stage Lung Cancer, the main modality of treatment it surgery. Earlier it used to be done by open surgery. A large incision is done and the surgery is performed. But now with advanced instrumentation, we are doing advanced techniques like VATS. VATS stands for Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Through this procedure we make an incision and we insert the camera and various other instruments.

Advanatge of VATS is wound size is smaller, patient pain is very less , patient recovers much faster.
