After harvest, stubble, silt, and slumping edges reduce the bund’s height and leak resistance, so re-cutting and packing the sides keeps the field workable and prevents uneven wet spots.
What to look out for is the bund profile and compaction: the vertical face should be trimmed clean, the top should be flat enough to walk and stable, and the base should be packed so seepage paths don’t develop. Cutting too aggressively can undercut the bank and cause collapse, especially where the soil is saturated and algae-coated. Footing is slippery, and repeated twisting with a long-handled hoe can strain the back and knees if the worker is pulling from an awkward stance.
It could be improved by working in a sequence—cut, pull spoil up, and then tamp—rather than only slicing, so the bund ends up denser and less prone to leaks. Using a short tamping board or the back of the hoe to compact in thin lifts, and keeping a consistent bund height along the run, will improve water retention. If many bunds need repair, a small rotary tiller with a bund-forming attachment or a simple level marker line can speed the job and make the waterline more uniform.
