Chin augmentation or genioplasty refers to any time you need to enhance or increase the size of the chin. This is often performed in one of two ways. One is to [inaudible 00:00:12] a chin implant, or two, through what's called a sliding genioplasty. Chin implant is when you place a silicone or some type of implant in the chin to really enhance it and increase its projection. Sliding genioplasty refers to making bone cuts and advancing the actual bone of the chin several millimeters to really enhance that projection. A lot of times people wonder, which one is the best for me? There are benefits and risks to each of these different procedures. Depending on your particular needs and goals, you may be a better candidate for one or the other.

Chin implant refers to placement of a implant such as a silicone implant to really augment the chin. It's a much smaller procedure than a sliding genioplasty with a smaller downtime. However, it does come at its own cost. The number one issue with it is that these implants can become infected. Two, these implants can migrate over years. So you might have a good outcome, but you might sustain a trauma or over the course of years that implant might migrate. So although it's a smaller procedure up front, you're dealing with the risk of the surgery for many, many years to come. I've taken out chin implants that have migrated after 25 years. You have to be mindful of that throughout the course of your life and the placement of that implant.

Now sliding genioplasty refers to making actual bone cuts in the chin and advancing the bone forward. The surgery all in all up front is a riskier procedure, and the healing and downtime is for about one to two weeks after the surgery as opposed to a chin implant where you can typically get back to work the next day. That being said, a sliding genioplasty is a natural permanent solution to microgenia. So once the bones fuse and settle, it's permanent. The risk of long term complications is much smaller and also the results are much more natural.

There are nonsurgical options to chin augmentation, predominantly using fillers. You could enhance the chin profile by injecting filler above the bone and molding it to look like an implant. However, no matter what kind of filler you get in your chin, it's going to be temporary.
