Abstract:
Contemporary scholars writing on Islamic ethics classify different trends in ethics under main disciplines like Kalām (speculative theology), fiqh and uṣul al-fiqh (law and jurisprudence), taṣawuf (Islamic mysticism) and falsafa (philosophy). But, I believe that if one is concerned with questions related to ethics rather than the history of ethical thought in Islam, then discussing different normative and metaethical theories in Islamic thought might be a more promising approach. My paper seeks to develop an understanding of ethics as a branch of moral philosophy and Islamic disciplines. Thus, it is an attempt to build upon theories pertaining to ethics in Islamic thought and also in contemporary moral philosophy, in order to provide plausible answers to perennial philosophical questions about the nature of morality and moral judgments. Answers that can avoid both relativism and scepticism and embrace Qur’anic moral values and universal moral principles. It is a search for a foundation of morality that is objective, rational and universal and in full agreement with the core teachings of Islam.
