We are happy to share with you the audio recording of a wedding reception concert by Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, performed in Trivandrum on 24th October 1968. Whether it was a sabha concert or a wedding concert, Lalgudi always believed in giving his best. Here he plays solo with Maestro Sri Umayalapuram Sivaraman on the mridangam. A sumptuous 2.45 hour long concert with a scintillating Karaharapriya and an elaborate Kambhoji followed by tanam, pallavi and ragamalikai. The signature sweet tone of Lalgudi’s violin and Sivaraman’s musical mridangam are things to be experienced and cannot be described in words. Listening to the recording, one understands how the wedding concerts those days had an attentive audience of avid music lovers. Music concerts and mangala vadhyam were an important and integral part of weddings. Wedding invitees eagerly looked forward to the reception concert and the opportunity to meet and interact with the artists. Many of Lalgudi’s devout fans followed him to these reception concerts uninvited, only to listen to him, and would leave soon after the last song before they could be noticed. It is interesting to note that Sri Tambura Krishnan, a well known tambura artist of yesteryear, travelled with Sri Lalgudi to play the tambura for him. We thank Sri R.
