Oddly, in the UK at least, Brussels sprouts are considered a key vegetable for this time of year, yet I struggle to meet many people who like them!

In fact, they are delicious when grown in healthy soil without fertilisers or other synthetic chemicals. The no dig biology really helps. And then you get a treat like the plant top I show you.

At this festive time of year, the Brussels sprout top is one of the most delicious parts of the plant. Cutting it does stop further sprout growth, but by late December that matters little, and it’s often worth harvesting before pigeons arrive as the weather turns colder.

The secrets for growing best Brussels are:
1 Soil with decent amounts of organic matter on top,
2 Choose F1 hybrids, not open pollinated which have not been maintained, this is Brigitte F1,
3 No dig for healthy soil biology – like, this bed already grew a fantastic crop of carrots in the spring, before these sprout plants which went in 17th June.
