My way to cybersecurity and entrepreneurship:
From Bedroom Computer to Cybersecurity Trailblazer
Carolin’s path into cybersecurity is anything but conventional. It began in elementary school, thanks to a beige home computer running Windows 95 and a bulky monitor. When educational games became too boring, she taught herself HTML and web development, later diving into server setups, networks, robotics, and everything the Apple ecosystem had to offer. As a teenager, she used those skills to build a music community for rock bands in the Cologne region.
After the first iPhone, a degree in political science with a business focus in Munich, and roles in finance and the startup world, where she led digital transformation and process-optimization projects and experienced an IPO, Carolin launched her first company at 27. As a consultant, she initially supported mid-sized companies and corporate teams through their digital transformation. Her experience with internet infrastructure, hybrid IT systems, forensics, and international operations soon led to increasing invitations for cybersecurity projects and speaking engagements.
Cyttraction: Redefining Risk Prevention
In 2020, drawing from years of hands-on advisory experience, Carolin began building Cyttraction, a secure platform for risk prevention and training. Her vision: learning experiences on risk and future-readiness so engaging that employees choose to complete them voluntarily. At the same time, Cyttraction helps organizations with upskilling, reskilling, and risk management, making dangerous knowledge gaps visible and closing them efficiently.
Cyttraction originally stood for “Cyber + Attraction,” a name conceived during a 2,600km bike tour across Europe in the middle of the pandemic, while resting in a hammock along the Danube.
Today, the Cyttraction “Risk Prevention Operating System” turns targeted lifelong learning into an effortless habit. It integrates seamlessly into all parts of work and life, and works alongside existing platforms. Fully bootstrapped, Cyttraction operates internationally with presences in Germany, Austria, Estonia, and the United States. In 2020, the Financial Times recognized Carolin and her concept as an “EdTech Pioneer of the New World.”
CISO as a Service: Safeguarding Data Integrity
As an external Chief Information Security Officer, Carolin works with startups, IT providers, and data-intensive organizations such as law firms, investors, and research institutions, teams with exceptionally sensitive access to stakeholder information.
She translates complex cyber and AI risks into clear, actionable strategies for leadership. Her work spans global threat monitoring, risk assessments, IT security culture, and advisory on EU regulations such as GDPR, NIS2, DORA, and the AI Act, as well as international cybersecurity standards.
Known for her efficient process design, strict vendor evaluations, and holistic approach to preventing cyberattacks and digital fraud, Carolin focuses on going beyond conventional frameworks. In 2024, Lacework named her among the “50 CISOs to Watch,” alongside industry leaders like Shira Rubinoff, “Have I Been Pwned?” founder Troy Hunt, and the CISOs of Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Under Armour.
Her combined background as a cybersecurity expert and entrepreneur earned her the title “The Entrepreneurial CISO.” She also advises US scaleups on successfully entering and navigating European markets.
International Speaker and Thought Leader
With more than a decade of global business experience, Carolin is a sought-after guest on international cybersecurity and technology stages. In 2025, she moderated a panel at CyberTech Tel Aviv and discussed cybersecurity in the age of AI with industry leaders. She is frequently giving media interviews, including OE24, CyberSec TV, and several podcasts.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Carolin shares her expertise through speaking engagements, articles, online courses, and interviews. Her upcoming book, "Managing Uncertainty.", is aimed at executives and shows how risk management, far beyond the IT domain, can become a strategic competitive advantage.
As her startup’s software development and global rollout accelerate, she is currently assembling a step-by-step guide to help companies achieve their first cybersecurity certification. She is also developing a specialized training program for current and future CISOs who want to replicate her holistic approach. In addition, she offers a course that has already helped newcomers and career-changers land their first cybersecurity roles.
