** NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED **

February 1st, 1992. Unbeaten Michael Moorer aka “Double M” takes on Mike “The Giant” White who stood at 6’ 10” with a reach of 85”, having 8” height and 7” reach advantages over the former WBO World Light Heavyweight Champion.

Interestingly, both fighters had troubles looking for the right sparring partners during training camp as Moorer could not find someone as tall as White who on the other hand could not find a southpaw.

Prefight records; Moorer 26(26)-0, White 26(19)-10-1.

In December 1988, Moorer won the WBO 175 pound title and made 9 successful defenses between January 1989 and December 1990. In April 1981, he moved up to the Heavyweight division beating Terry Davis via TKO2.

Between June and November 1991, he went 3(3)-0 before facing the biggest opponent of his career in Mike White, who made his pro debut back in December 1980.

Entering the bout, the undefeated 24 year old Moorer had defeated notable opponents such as Jim MacDonald, Freddie Delgado, Leslie Stewart & Alex Stewart.

In the first minute of round 1, Moorer connected with a thunderous left hand that turned White’s legs into jelly and crumbled to the canvas. Though visibly hurt, Michael was unable to finish despite having plenty of time left as the towering fighter from Bay City, Michigan was able to escape with his enormous height and reach advantages although he was hurt a few more times before the bell sounded.

However, White came back and did well in rounds 2, 3 & 4 as he landed some clean long right hands and upped his work rate while Moorer mostly throw 1 or 2 shots at a time in contrasts with his normally high output in previous bouts. This is due to the fact that he had to reach higher to find his 6’10” opponent’s head which is more energy sapping thus he was being more economical in dispensing his punches.

From round 5 onward, The Giant was showing signs of tiredness as he started to breathe with his mouth open time and time again which allowed Double M to connect at a higher percentage for the most part.

With less than 40 seconds left in round 7, Moorer scored another knockdown with a barrage of lefts and rights that sent the colossal White to the canvas for the second time. Without much time left, the determined young southpaw was again unable to finish as Mike was using his 85” wingspan to defend himself.

From round 8 on, White turned southpaw more often to nullify Moorer’s straight left hands that got him in trouble a couple of times earlier but with his fatigue kicked in, he was unable to land effectively and his 6’2” opponent was able to find his mark most of the time.

By round 9, Mike’s right eye was badly swollen and he was spitting blood around the ring.

With about 2 seconds left in round 10, Moorer landed 2 pulverizing right hooks that chopped down The Giant face-first to the canvas. Although Mike White was clearly knocked out, he made it to the final bell in a rare and lucky escape as the rule of bout stated that a fighter can only be saved by the bell in the last round.

The 3 judges scored it 99-87, 98-89 & 97-90 for Double M who earned his first decision victory in 27 fights.

It was also his first time going the distance, as the longest he went previously was against Marcellus Allen in March 1990 where he won via RTD9.

In May of the same year, Michael Moorer went on to become the first ever southpaw World Heavyweight Champion by stopping Smokin’ Bert Cooper in 5 rounds after a spectacular back and forth battle to win the vacant WBO World Heavyweight Title.

Michael Moorer vs Bert Cooper is widely considered to be one of the Greatest Heavyweight Title Fights of All Time.
