Chekadi is a tribal-majority village located in the Pulpalli panchayat of Wayanad district, Kerala. It lies in the beautiful valley of the Kabani River, right on the Kerala-Karnataka border. The Kabani River, which separates Pulpally and Tirunelli panchayats, flows through this region. Chekadi is easily accessible from both Pulpally town, 13 km away, and Kattikulam. More than 80% of the village population belongs to tribal communities, including the Adiyar, Paniya, Kattunayakar, and Urali tribes. Kannada, tribal languages, and Malayalam are the main languages spoken in the area.

Chekadi represents a rich blend of four distinct cultures: river valley culture, forest culture, tribal culture, and rice farming culture. It is one of the few places in Kerala where traditional paddy fields are still preserved, providing a glimpse into the village’s deep connection with agriculture. The geographical landscape is diverse, with lush paddy fields, the Kabani River, and surrounding forests on three sides. Kabani, one of Kerala’s three east-flowing rivers and a major tributary of the Kaveri, originates from the hills near the Kozhikode-Wayanad border. The village’s 250 acres include 180 acres of paddy fields, where rare rice varieties like Gandakashala and Jeerakashala are cultivated. These varieties are prized for their high nutritional value and resilience, earning a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2010.

കേരളത്തിലെ വയനാട് ജില്ലയിലെ പുൽപ്പള്ളി പഞ്ചായത്തിലെ ഒരു ആദിവാസി ഭൂരിപക്ഷ ഗ്രാമമാണ് ചേകാടി. കേരള-കർണാടക അതിർത്തിയിൽ കബനി നദിയുടെ താഴ്‌വരയിലാണ് ഇത്. പുൽപ്പള്ളി, തിരുനെല്ലി പഞ്ചായത്തുകളെ വേർതിരിക്കുന്ന കബനി നദി ഇവിടെയാണ്. പുൽപ്പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നും കാട്ടിക്കുളം പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരാം. പുൽപ്പള്ളി ടൗണിൽ നിന്ന് 13 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് ചേകാടി. ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ 80 ശതമാനത്തിലധികം ആദിവാസി വിഭാഗങ്ങളുള്ള ഒരു ആദിവാസി ഗ്രാമമാണ് ചേകാടി.
കന്നഡ, ആദിവാസി ഭാഷകൾ, മലയാളം എന്നിവയാണ് ഇവിടെ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന ഭാഷകൾ. ആദിവാസി സമൂഹങ്ങളാണ് ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ഭൂരിപക്ഷം. അടിയർ, പണിയ, കാട്ടുനായകർ, ഊരാളി എന്നിവരാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന ഗോത്രങ്ങൾ.

ചേകാടി നാല് വ്യത്യസ്ത സംസ്കാരങ്ങൾ വഹിക്കുന്നു. നദീതട സംസ്കാരം, വന സംസ്കാരം, ഗോത്ര സംസ്കാരം, നെൽ സംസ്കാരം എന്നിവയുടെ സംഗമസ്ഥാനമാണിത്. നെൽവയലുകൾ നിരപ്പാക്കിയിട്ടില്ലാത്ത കേരളത്തിലെ അപൂർവ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്.

നെൽവയലുകളുടെയും നദിയുടെയും വനത്തിൻ്റെയും വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായ ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയാണ് ചേകാടിയിലുള്ളത്. ഗ്രാമത്തിന് ചുറ്റും മൂന്ന് വശവും കാടും ഒരു വശത്ത് കബനി നദിയുമാണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ കിഴക്കോട്ടൊഴുകുന്ന മൂന്ന് നദികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് കബനി. കാവേരി നദിയുടെ പ്രധാന കൈവഴിയായ കബനി നദി കോഴിക്കോട്-വയനാട് അതിർത്തിയിൽ കുറ്റ്യാടി-മാനന്തവാടി റോഡിന് സമീപമുള്ള കുന്നുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉത്ഭവിക്കുന്നത്. ആകെയുള്ള 250 ഏക്കറിൽ 180 ഏക്കറും അപൂർവയിനം നെല്ല് കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്ന പാടശേഖരങ്ങളാണ്. ഗന്ധകശാല അരിയും ജീരകശാല അരിയും ചേകാടി ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. രണ്ട് ഇനങ്ങളും ഉയർന്ന പോഷകമൂല്യമുള്ളതും പരുക്കൻ കാലാവസ്ഥയെയും കീടങ്ങളെയും പ്രതിരോധിക്കുന്നതുമാണ്. ഗന്ധകശാല, ജീരകശാല എന്നീ രണ്ട് ഇനങ്ങൾക്കും 2010-ൽ ജിയോഗ്രാഫിക്കൽ ഇൻഡിക്കേഷൻ ടാഗ് ലഭിച്ചു.
