The wonderful Largo by George Friedrich Händel is the opening aria from his 1738 opera Serse (or Xerxes). The opera was a commercial failure, lasting only five performances in London after its premiere, but the aria was rediscovered in the 19th century and became one of Händel's best-known pieces.
